#PortoCoffee: Unveiling the best specialty coffee shops in Porto, Portugal

#PortoCoffee: Unveiling the best specialty coffee shops in Porto, Portugal | Aliz’s Wonderland

Porto, Portugal is home to some fantastic specialty coffee shops worth visiting. In this Porto guide, you will explore the top 7 must-visit coffee shops (and brunch places) for all coffee lovers. From cosy and intimate to modern and sleek, these specialty cafés will surely delight and impress. I travelled to Porto with my parents in October 2022, and of course, specialty cafés and brunch places were included in the itinerary.

At the end of the blog post, you’ll find even more specialty cafés and brunch spots (and a map), which I couldn’t visit, but were on the list. Maybe next time 🙂

In general, I noticed that coffee places don’t open very early. Not even Fábrica Coffee Roasters close to São Bento railway station… It opens only at 8:30 am, so we remained without morning coffee on our day trip to Douro Valley…

Note:

The address, prices and opening times are also included in the post. Still, it can change anytime, especially the opening time, so check it on their sites to ensure you catch your dreamy Portuguese specialty coffee.

Where to drink the best specialty coffee in Porto, Portugal?

My Coffee Porto

If you’re a “coffee with a view” person, visit this specialty café in Porto. I’m sure this is one of Porto’s most scenic specialty coffee shops. It’s located in the heart of the city, below Luís I. Bridge, on the way to the riverside next to the stairs.

The interior is small, just like their terrace with 5 tables. However, those tables have a gorgeous view of the city and the Douro River, making it a perfect Instagrammable café of Porto. In the afternoon the sun shines there so you can sunbathe with your coffee. With a menu that includes traditional espresso drinks, pour-overs, and cold brews, there’s something to satisfy every coffee preference.

The waiters and baristas are friendly and fast. I had a tasty and refreshing cold brew in the warm weather, and my parents went for sangrias, though they didn’t like it.

And if you’re feeling hungry, try their delicious pastries and sandwiches, all made with fresh, local ingredients. Their Pastel de nata was super creamy, so we had to order an extra round 😀 We visited it on our last day, so who knows when we could taste this Portuguese delight again.

Take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a top-notch coffee experience at My Coffee Porto.

Price:

  • Cold brew – 3,00 EUR
  • Sangria – 6,00 EUR
  • Pastel de nata – 1,20 EUR

C’alma Coffee Room

If you’re wandering on the famous Rua de Santa Catarina shopping street, don’t stop at the touristy Café Majestic, the fanciest, most expensive and probably the most famous coffee shop in Porto. Instead, visit C’alma Coffee Room for a unique and artistic coffee experience. Its interior was a mix of historical and modern vibes. The chandeliers and the wall fountain decorated with azulejos matched the contemporary metal and wooden surfaces.

The café prides itself on sourcing high-quality, single-origin beans from around the world. The tasty coffees were served in stylish cups, and we had to accompany them with pastel de nata.

The welcoming staff adds to the relaxed ambience of the café, making for a one-of-a-kind coffee experience in Porto.

Specialty cafés with brunch in Porto, Portugal

Do Norte Café by Hungry Biker

If you’re looking for a coffee shop that combines great coffee with a unique atmosphere, look no further than Do Norte Café by Hungry Biker. This quirky café is located between Livraria Lello and São Bento railway station.

The café had a cool style, a mix of natural and vintage vibes. The colour palette mainly consisted of white and brown with wooden textures. I loved the timber walls and all the wooden furniture and accessories. The shelves and walls were full of classical relics, plants and dried flowers. The small outdoor area also looked fantastic with the greenery.

It was too late for a flat white, so I tried something different this time. Their Ginger latte was so tasty, the perfect combination of milk, coffee and ginger. Give it a try!

But Do Norte Café isn’t just about great coffee. They also offer a diverse all-day brunch menu. Choose from a range of tasty brunch options and light bites, including smoothie bowls, porridge, sandwiches, toasts, pancakes and salads. It was hard to choose, but I went for their home-made salty waffles. The waffles were made with cheese and spinach and were served with smoked salmon, salmon, salad and hummus. It was super delicious.

Price:

  • Ginger latte – 3,00 EUR
  • Home-made salty waffles – 10,90 EUR

Nicolau Porto

Nicolau Porto is a charming café that offers a fresh atmosphere where you can relax and enjoy coffee and brunch. It’s in the centre, close to Ingreja do Carmo and Carmelita. The tables and hanging plants are already attractive from the outside. The plants also appear inside, making the interior cosy and welcoming with a modern yet rustic decor.

It was Friday, and we arrived just in time to skip waiting (around 9:30 am). Get ready to stay in a queue if you arrive later. There were many waiters, though the service was still slow. We also waited to get our order and waited a lot for our coffee and food as well. However, it was worth waiting for.

The menu features a variety of specialty coffees and teas and a selection of toasts, granola, salads, egg dishes and pancakes for the sweet tooth. Our breakfasts were beautiful and delicious. My avocado toast, called Ovos Nicolau, was served with poached eggs, salted turmeric granola and beet hummus. It looked like a minimal masterpiece on the gorgeous plate. So so tasty! The coffee was delicious, though they didn’t care much about latte art…

Don’t miss the toilet, totally worth a visit. One of the most stylish toilets ever!

And their logo is the cutest! It’s a coffee lover dog 🙂

Price:

  • Ovos Nicolau – 7,50 EUR
  • Ovos Basílio – 7,50 EUR
  • Ovos Benedict – 7,50 EUR
  • Flat white – 2,70 EUR
  • Cappuccino – 2,80 EUR

Zenith

Brunch all day, everyday!

This is my kind of place! And they also have locations in Lisbon, Madrid and Barcelona.

Zenith Porto is nestled in the city’s heart, just a 1-minute walk from Igreja do Carmo. This cosy brunch and coffee place offers a unique experience you cannot miss.

Its modern and comfortable space has a chic industrial look with many tables, and you can also take a seat on the cosy terrace. We were there on a Tuesday morning, and it was busy, especially after 11 am. The waiters were accommodating and kind.

They serve brunch with various dishes and drinks, including vegan and gluten-free options. Zenith is famous for its Francesinha’s pancake, a twist on the traditional Portuguese sandwich with cheese, ham, sausage and tomato sauce. However, you can also choose from other pancakes, smoothie bowls, egg dishes, bagels, salad bowls, tacos, toasts, pastries and cocktails.

My dad chose a pancake with Dulce de leite hinted with fruits and seeds. My mom and I went for salty egg dishes with avocado. Both were delicious and beautiful. And, of course, the coffee was super tasty.

Price:

  • Egg’s Benedict – 7,50 EUR
  • Egg’s Zenith with extra smoked salmon – 11,50 EUR
  • Pancakes with Dulce de leite – 7,00 EUR
  • Flat white – 2,50 EUR
  • Cappuccino – 2,50 EUR
  • Tea – 3,00 EUR
