Welcome to County Mayo! From cascading waterfalls to mesmerising panorama, we’ve compiled a 4-day itinerary to make the most of your time in this Irish wonderland. County Mayo is beyond imagination. You may have seen photos of the picturesque sea stack of Downpatrick Head, the most famous attraction in County Mayo along the Wild Atlantic Way. However, in this 4-day adventure in Co. Mayo, we came across enchanting landscapes, discovered some hidden gems, and experienced Ireland’s warm hospitality and humour.

Co. Mayo travel itinerary – what to do and where to go

How to get to County Mayo, Ireland?

We opted for the flexibility and rented a car at Dublin airport to drive to Mayo. In Ireland, the most beautiful places and hidden gems are only reachable by car (or motorcycle or bicycle), so we always rent a car for these occasions. 

The GPS suggested driving through County Galway, so with breaks, it took almost 4 hours to get to our 1st stop in South Mayo. 

There are tolls on the motorway. Luckily, you don’t need cash, you can just tap your card. 

How to spend 4 days in Co. Mayo, Ireland?

Day 1 – Thursday – South Mayo

Lunch and coffee break at The Purple Door Café 

After nearly a four-hour drive from Dublin, we almost reached our first destination, a majestic waterfall. However, a necessary pit stop led us to The Purple Door Café, situated on the border of Co. Galway and Mayo. 

With a tempting lunch menu offering soups, salads, and various main courses, we decided to refuel here. The food was filling, but nothing exceptional. The café, with its friendly staff and a few cosy tables, also hosts an outdoor area for sunnier days.

Explore Aasleagh Falls

The fall is stunning after a rainy period when more Guinness-coloured water cascades down. To get there, park your car at the side of the road next to the bridge. The parking space is tiny, but a new parking area is under construction.

The waterfall is visible from the bridge and road, but you can get a closer look from both sides. On the right, a wider gravel path leads to a closer angle and a higher viewpoint. Be cautious if you opt for the small, unpaved path on the left… It can get muddy, so waterproof shoes are advisable. We learned this the hard way and turned back.

Drive along Killary Fjord

If you have extra time, you could also include in your itinerary a Killary Fjord boat tour starting from the fjord’s Galway side. Unfortunately, the timetable didn’t align with our schedule, so we continued North. 

Stop at the small parking area overlooking the fjord for a stunning view of hills, water, and, of course, sheep.  

Drive carefully because sheep around the lakeside don’t turn right or left before crossing the road. And this goes for the whole County Mayo 🙂

Stop at Doolough Valley Famine Memorial and adore the view of Doo Lough

This Wild Atlantic Way stop offers a gorgeous view of the Doo Lough (in English means Black Lake) and the valley. The memorial commemorates the Great Famine of Ireland, when people had to walk in bad weather from Louisburgh to Delphi Lodge (20 km), with many perishing at the lake. 

Chill at Old Head Beach, Louisburg 

Take a breather on a bench and soak in the views of Croagh Patrick and Clew Bay.

For adventure and water activities, you can discover the kayak and/or snorkel trails either solo or with a guided tour. 

Facilities, including toilets, are available at the beach’s parking area.

Hike the Murrisk mountain loop and/or Croagh Patrick trail

The 765 m high Croagh Patrick is Mayo’s most famous symbol and a Holy Mountain for the Irish. 

To reach the Croagh Patrick parking lot, search for Murrisk car park on Google Maps. There’s a map with different routes. According to Alltrails, Croagh Patrick trail is challenging. We aren’t that experienced hikers, so we went for the easier solution…

We completed the 3,4 km loop in an hour and 10 minutes, including photo breaks, confusion and talking to the sheep… 

The beginning, also part of the Croagh Patrick hike, was a bit steep but offered a breathtaking view of Clew bay. 

After taking a left turn to our trail, we didn’t meet anyone, perhaps due to the late hour (4:30 pm) or the barely visible path… Lacking a distinct route, marked only by poles with purple signs amidst wet, muddy ground. The final part, next to the road, provided a more straightforward trail.

Check into Ballina Hotel Manor

From there, we drove to our hotel in Ballina. The hotel had an eclectic vibe with the decorations. Our spacious room, though different from the Booking photos, housed a large, comfy bed. 

The hotel offered a diverse breakfast menu, prompting us to indulge each morning. The restaurant was also an option for dinner. After a quick check-in, we headed out to explore the city’s dinner options. 

Dinner at Luskin’s Bistro in Ballina

Situated in a yard with other dining options and outdoor seating, Luskin’s Bistro caught our attention with its seafood chowder on the menu. We couldn’t resist giving it a try, and Jackson opted for salmon as the main course. The chowder, creamy and brimming with fish, particularly salmon, impressed us. The bread was a bit dry, but the overall dining experience satisfied us. The salmon, while tasty, didn’t venture into extraordinary territory.

Day 2 – Friday – North Mayo 

Discover Downpatrick Head

The reason behind visiting Mayo was Downpatrick Head. I really wanted to see this unique sea stack 🙂 

Just park your car at the spacious parking lot. There was also a portable toilet, probably the cleanest one I’ve ever been to. Even had toilet paper. 

Then, walk along the coastline to the sea stack called Dun Briste (‘The Broken Fort’ in English). Downpatrick Head is one of the most beautiful places in Ireland. The entire coastline is a spectacle, the panorama is breathtaking, and the fluffy grass underfoot invites exploration. We spent around an hour wandering around. You’ll also find St Patrick’s statue and the Eire 64 sign from WW2. First, we didn’t notice the sign made of stones, even if we were next to it. There wasn’t a higher spot to take a better look at it.

Learn about early farming in Céide Fields Visitors Centre

You’ll find Céide Fields Visitors Centre just a short drive away. There’s an admission fee, which covered both an enlightening exhibition and a guided tour of the lands.

The exhibition transported us 5500 years into the past, revealing the life of early farmers through a 360° AV experience, games, facts, objects, videos and the excavation story. Surprisingly engaging, the highlight was reconstructing a stone wall, akin to a puzzle.

The hour-long guided tour led us through bogs and remnants of stone walls. Our guide injected humor into facts about walls, excavation, bog, turf, and toxic and non-toxic plants. Along the tour, we had a great view of the ocean, nearby mountains and Downpatrick Head. 

The building houses a café where we grabbed salmon bagels for takeaway, a bit pricey but accompanied by salad and delicious.

Lunch and coffee break at Coast Coffee

Just a few minutes from the visitor centre, we saw a coffee booth on the coastline, so we headed back there with our takeaway bagels. We indulged in lunch and coffee against the backdrop of Downpatrick Head and the coast.

After our break, we hopped back into the car for a 30-minute drive to our next adventure.

Hike to Eire 63 Sign, Portacloy Loop-Cliff Walk

The 13 km Benwee Head Trail on AllTrails promises an unimaginable view for those with more time. Opting for a shorter route, we embarked on the Portacloy Loop-Cliff Walk, from Portacloy Beach to the Eire sign. The view was breathtaking even on these few kilometres.

We parked the car at Portacloy Beach, and just followed the purple arrow, this time with better luck. Initially, the path was elusive, luckily the sheep tried to help us. The trail became clearer after crossing the gate, and signs guided the way. Panoramic views of the bay, sea, cliffs, and a distant Downpatrick Head made the journey worthwhile. From the top, you can also look at the other bay.

The Eire 63 sign offered a vista with Downpatrick Head in the distance. The equally stunning return provided a view of the bay and the beach. 

Covering the easy 3-4 km loop took about an hour. Surprisingly, we had the trail to ourselves.

Stop at Dún na mBó (Doonamo Point)

After a 40-minute drive, we reached the next viewpoint and fort site. You can look down to a blowhole, although the calm sea meant we missed the dramatic water show. However, the panorama was amazing.

Dinner at Talbot’s Bar and Restaurant

Before reaching our final stop, we stopped for dinner at Talbot’s Bar and Restaurant in Belmullet. 

The seafood chowder with the tasty bread left a positive impression. However, the soup had too much potato and veggies…The main dishes, while good, didn’t reach extraordinary heights. 

Sunset at Belmullet Tidal Pool 

Our plan to take a dip at the Belmullet Tidal Pool failed… The tide was high, submerging the pool’s edge. Lesson learned. Check the tide forecast on Tideschart website. 

We could still savour the sunset hues with the stunning backdrop of Achill Island.

Day 3 – Saturday – Achill island

Embarking on a 1.5-hour drive from Ballina, Achill Island awaited with promises of stunning beaches, scenic coastlines, and majestic mountains, shaping a perfect day of exploration.

Swim at Keel Beach

Our Achill island adventure started at Keel Beach, a super scenic long beach surrounded by hills. The sun decided to grace us with its presence, turning the landscape unbelievably beautiful, almost making us question whether we were still in Ireland.

Keel Beach took the spotlight as our first stop because we had a date with Sabhna Saunas, offering a unique sauna-on-the-beach experience.

Enjoy the Sabhna Saunas at Keel Beach 

The sauna experience was more than impressive. The sauna, resembling a barrel, provided a stunning view of the beach and the vast ocean. That’s what I call a “sauna with a view”! 

The cabin fits up to 6 people, and you can book shared and private sauna experiences. We shared the sauna with 4 friendly, fun guys. The cabin became our sanctuary for three cycles of sauna and sea dips. 

Booking online in advance is a must. Sabhna Saunas also have a sauna on Dugort Beach. 

Beach time at Keem Beach

A 10-minute drive brought us to Keem Beach, nestled on the other side of a hill. The temperature dropped noticeably, and clouds played hide-and-seek with the sun. 

Despite being the island’s most popular beach, Keem Beach didn’t quite match the turquoise water and sunbathers as depicted in the photos.

Hike to Moytoge Head Lookout Post (not this time…)

Initially, our plan included a hike to the Moytoge Head Lookout Post. However, obscured by clouds and seemingly daunting in height, we opted for the sunnier side of the island.

The hike, a 3.2 km out-and-back with 215 m elevation. According to AllTrails, it can be completed in an hour and 20 minutes.

Lunch break at The Beehive Craft Coffee Shop

Heading back toward Keel Bay, we paused for lunch at The Beehive Craft Coffee Shop. With tables offering bay views, my Superfood salad hit the spot, and Jackson also enjoyed his beef stew. We couldn’t resist testing the brownie, and it not only passed the test but paired exceptionally well with Bailey’s coffee. 

Discover the Deserted village at Slievemore mountain 

Deserted Village is home to approximately 100 remaining stone houses, some dating back 5000 years. You can walk along the road and even between the houses. 

Currently, sheep rule the area, just like the whole County Mayo 😉 It had a mystical atmosphere and a fantastic view of Keel Bay. 

Enjoy the view from Minaun Heights (+hike)

We drove up to the viewpoint, hoping for the clouds to leave. Well, the clouds decided to stay, so we remained without a panorama but clouds. 

There’s a 3 km hike to an even better viewpoint, but not hoping for a clearer view, we skipped it. On the descent, a fortunate gap in the clouds allowed us a partial panorama from the roadside.

Adore the panorama at White Cliffs of Ashleam

A brief but essential stop on the west coast treated us to a stunning panorama of the coastline and the ocean. Truly a sight not to be missed.

Stop by Grace O’Malley’s Towerhouse, Kildavnet Tower

Another quick stop on the way back to the mainland. Conveniently located, a short walk from the car park allows exploration of the tower, offering a glimpse into history.

Dinner at The Junction in Ballina

As we returned to Ballina and evening approached, many kitchens closed, unfortunately. We settled for The Junction on the main street. While resembling more of a fast-food joint, the extensive menu left room for choice. Although not blown away, my panini fared better than my boyfriend’s salmon with potato.

Day 4 – Sunday – Wild Nephin National Park and Westport 

Our Sunday started with a visit to the Ballycroy Visitor Centre, nestled within the Wild Nephin National Park. After bidding farewell to our hotel, an hour’s drive led us to this nature haven.

Visit Ballycroy Visitor Centre and stroll in Wild Nephin National Park

There’s a free spacious parking area at the visitor centre, where a friendly receptionist welcomed us and shared insights about the area.

Entrance to both the park and the visitor centre was free. The centre featured an interactive exhibition covering the national park, its flora, and fauna.

A 2 km loop starts at the visitor centre, which was an easy walk on a gravel path. A viewing point on the way allowed us to immerse ourselves in the panoramic beauty of Achill Island and the park’s hills.

The trail seamlessly brought us back to the visitor centre, which housed a coffee shop and restrooms on the top floor.

Walk along Claggan Mountain Coastal Trail 

For those seeking another 2 km seaside walk with breathtaking views, the Claggan Mountain Coastal Trail is a must-add to your Mayo itinerary. The parking area is conveniently located at the roadside, and a wooden path guides you to the water’s edge. The trail offers insights into the area’s bog, flora and fauna.

While walking back along the seaside is an option, waterproof boots might be necessary, as the water level was high during our visit.

Stroll in Westport

On the way back to Dublin, we stopped in Westport, a charming town adorned with a river and quaint buildings. 

Our first exploration led us to the Quay, where we strolled to the end of the pier for a closer look at Croagh Patrick. Surprisingly, the difference in view from the parking area and the pier’s end was minimal. 

Lunch at Servd. in Westport

Returning to the city centre, we explored Westport’s vibrant streets and indulged in lunch at Servd., “A good place to get fed and watered”.

The menu presented my posh falafel as a standout, earning the title of my best falafel ever. The secret ingredients in the salad and sauces elevated the dish. However, Jackson’s experience with his burger was less thrilling.

Post-lunch, we strolled through the city centre, adoring the charming streets with colorful houses, cafés, restaurants, and shops. While we wished for a more extended stay, a 3.5-hour drive awaited us back to Dublin.

During our 4-day Mayo road trip, we spent money mainly on accommodation, travel costs and food. Our total trip expense was 1270 EUR for the both of us, averaging 635 EUR per person.
