Mr Caesar is the best, I was absolutely terrified about having both cataracts operated on but he put me at ease and was very supportive and understanding which is exactly what I needed as I was very anxious

Imagine having reached your 79th birthday you are told you have developing cataracts in both eyes! Then, you are told to find an ophthalmic surgeon because an eye operation will be necessary ...... but ... under a local anaesthetic! Basically someone cutting into your eyes, or in my case both eyes, to remove the offending cataracts and implant new lenses!! All while fully aware of what's going on around you .... will I be able to "see" what the surgeon is doing?!! Fortunately for me, due to the NHS waiting time, my Benenden insurance agreed to cover the associated costs and I was given a choice of surgeons to carryout the procedure. Let's be totally honest I was petrified by the thought of one eye being operated on, leave alone both eyes! After a lot of careful research I opted for Mr Ferris at the Winfield Hospital in Gloucester. Before my first appointment I was sent information and links to various relevant online information courtesy of his secretary. Then we arranged a time for a telephone consultation with Mr Ferris for early the next evening. This was very useful because following a lot of questioning about my life style, hobbies, interests he explained in detail what the procedure involved! Next was a pre-op visit to see Mr Ferris. A nurse told me she was going to give me drops to dilate my pupils prior to seeing Mr Ferris. What's more, this bit would be the "worst part" of the entire procedure ... "it will sting a little bit!" Yea I bet! Well, it wasn't particularly uncomfortable but the worst part? Ummm! Next I was examined by Mr Ferris and he allayed all my fears and explained absolutely everything I needed to know. To be honest I was still sceptical, particularly about what I would be able to see and feel during the procedure. Less than two weeks later I was back for "the procedure". I won't say I was apprehensive, it was more like petrified! Into theatre I went and onto the operating table and the back of my head into the recess with instructions to stay as still as possible. My eyes were anaesthetised and, well, after that and for the next hour I experienced what I can only described as a "lights and water" show. I felt nothing and saw nothing but dancing colours and felt some drops of fluid running down the side of my face. Mr Ferris repeatedly checked I was comfortable and an hour later I was back in my day room. After a final check I was given a number of bottles of eye drops with strict instructions to complete the course. Which I did! After early 40 years of wearing glasses I now only need a +1.5 pair from Boots for close reading. My long distance sight is excellent Thanks to Mr Ferris and his team for a wonderful experience and a fantastic result. Try as I might I am unable to identify one aspect I could criticise from my first contact. Just brilliant!
