About

Professor Sashi Kommu is a Consultant Pelvic Cancer Urological Surgeon and Professor of Urology at The School of Biosciences, University of Kent and East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust. His subspecialty interest is in minimally invasive urological cancer management including robotic urological surgery (Prostate Cancer).

He is Urology Lead Cancer Clinician and MDT Lead for the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust and the Prostate Cancer Lead for the Kent and Medway Cancer Alliance Network. He leads the National Institute for Health & Care Research (NIHR) for all 14 major surgical specialties in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex.

He offers Robotic Radical Prostatectomy. His outcomes for positive surgical margins are among the lowest in the published literature. He is an official Intuitive Surgical Proctor (Trainer) for da Vinci Robotic Prostatectomy.

Prof. Kommu completed his Higher Surgical Training as a Specialist Registrar/Urology Resident in the London Deanery. He underwent training in prostate and bladder cancer surgery at Guy's Hospital (Robotic Prostatectomy) and Post CCT Fellowship in East Sussex Healthcare (Robotic Prostatectomy & Cystectomy).

His primary clinical interests are minimally invasive urological cancer management, surgical robotics, and intelligent probes. He also drives research to improve "the patient journey" with a patient centred approach. He conducted official research with The Translational Cancer Genetics Team at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and The Institute of Cancer Research, where he strengthened his scientific methods in advanced laboratory work with a focus on cancer genetics and proteomics.

As trainee, he has been recognised by the Endourological Society for work dedicated to laparoscopic & robotic skill acquisition and delivery including setting up of Travelling Educational Scholarships.

He was part of the team that pioneered single site urological laparoscopic surgery in the U.K. and published the first series in 2009.

He was awarded 3* Point Clinical Excellence Awards after his first year of appointment as a Consultant in the NHS (National Awards given to Consultants who contribute most to the delivery of safe and high-quality care and the improvement of NHS services).

He has more than 100 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious scientific and medical journals such as The Lancet. In addition, he has over 350 Scientific Presentations, as well as various book chapters and books. He has numerous academic awards including The Olympus Award at The 25th World Congress of Endourology in Cleveland U.S.A. 2006. He developed a cost effective Telerounding Kit for Remote Teleconsultations, which was presented at The House of Commons (Hosted by The British Parliament) in 2006. His ability to blend medical science with engineering and technology has earned him two NASA collaborative scientific commendations. Among several novel concepts described by Professor Kommu, include ‘suppressor screening in urological cancer screening' and ‘the supplementary biomarker approach' for detecting cancers.

His Innovative approach to clinical practice coupled with philanthropic work led him to be elected to The New European Surgical Academy in March 2023.

I was very nervous when meeting professor Kommu but he quickly put me at ease. He explained everything I needed to know about the operation and what would happen after. I'm so glad I took his advice and would recommend anyone else to do the same . Its fourteen months since my operation and Mr Kommu has still kept in touch.

I went in Canterbury Hospital to have Robotically Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy by Professor S. Kommu on April 14th Friday and all went well and was back home at 7pm 15th Saturday . I took it easy for 2 weeks then had the catheter removed on the 28th April. I was careful for the next 10 weeks not to lift or strain myself doing things around the house and garden. After12 weeks from the surgery I was back out on my jet ski enjoying my hobby again with my friends riding the waves again. By October 12th I stopped using the pads as was now feeling confident without them and just to add a Big thanks to all and everyone for making this experience having surgery go well.

It's not easy to encapsulate my heartfelt appreciation for Professor Kommu in less than many thousands of words. His professionalism, bedside manner, commitment to his patients, seemingly without time constraints to speak to his patients (old and new ones) although we know he is, to say the least, an extremely busy surgeon, speak many volumes as to just how fortunate I was to have had him appointed as my guide through what has been an often traumatic period. Without his steadfast support, I am not sure if I would have made the recovery that I have done. Thank you Sashi.

Sashi is an enthusiastic, forward thinking, innovative consultant colleague. He is very approachable and a pleasure to work with. He was very helpful to me as a colleague ENT robotic surgeon in setting up a new head and neck robotic service at Kent & Canterbury Hospital. He is a team player, and we have worked together in setting the multidisciplinary robotic surgery students selected component for KMMS medical students. Sashi is well respected in the hospital, patient-centred in his approach and practices evidence based medicine in his clinical practice. I would happily recommend Mr Kommu to look after one of my family members.
