Budapest’s best outdoor bars along the Danube, a local’s picks

Budapest’s best outdoor bars along the Danube, a local’s picks | Aliz’s Wonderland

Why do you like summer? Because of sunshine, warm summer nights or having fun at the seaside? Well, Budapest doesn’t have a sea, albeit it has a river called Danube! And along the Danube, you’ll find many places to revel in sunlight, enjoy the sunset or just watch the river and the beautiful landmarks of Budapest. Grab a drink and let the colours of the sun mesmerize you. You can choose from many open-air bars to fancy the sunset, so I collected you the best outdoor bars to visit in summer along the Danube in Budapest.

Most of these outdoor bars are closed in the cold season, only two of them are open during the whole year. Find your favourite(s), browse on the map.

The address and opening times are also included in the post, but it can change anytime, especially the opening time, so check it on their sites to not miss your dreamy sunset.

Let’s see the best outdoor bars to visit along the Danube in Budapest!

Fellini Római Kultúrbisztró

Fellini Római Kultúrbisztró offers a special and unique experience with the Danube at your feet. The closeness of the Danube gives a special atmosphere to this place. Here you can even walk into the river.

Or just sit on a colourful summer chair and enjoy the view with a drink 😉 The drink menu includes tasty lemonade, wine, beer and a few cocktails. They use reusable cups, which costs 250 HUF (refundable). This amount has to be paid by cash, but the other items can be paid by card.

If you’re hungry, search for their colourful food truck next to the promenade, which offers a few food options like paninis, salads, fish & chips, chicken skewers, picnic bowls. Then just pay attention to the flag with your number (you’ll know what I’m talking about).

Fellini is located at Római part (Római embankment), so it’s a bit far from the city centre, but it’s easily accessible by boat. The public transport boat service (timetables on the homepage of the BKK) stops at the main attractions of Budapest, just take on wherever you want in the centre and boat D12 will take you to Római part.

You can take other types of public transportation like bus or suburban railways (HÉV), or rent a bicycle and enjoy the summer breeze.

Before going, be aware of the season and water level, because in spring and early summer the water level can be higher so you might not have the same vibe as in mid or late summer!

Kabin

Kabin is also situated at the northern part of Budapest, actually from there, you can see Fellini Római Kultúrbisztró on the opposite side. Though you can’t access this open-air bar by boat (only if you have a private one…), the easiest way is going by metro and walking a bit on the southern part of the bridge (the northern walkway doesn’t have a stair leading to the Danube bank).

Grab a drink in your reusable cup (refundable) and if you’re lucky, you can have your own cabin to enjoy your drink with a view of the Danube. If you’re hungry just order some tasty food like hamburger, sausage, nachos or veggie dip.

Bring some cash, they don’t accept card!

On weekends, live music is provided by local DJs, get ready for the party!

Kadarka Bárka

Kadarka Bárka on Margaret Island is famous for its wine selection, just like the Kadarka Wine Bar on Király street. They even have wine flavoured ice cream, which was quite good. You won’t stay without a drink, if you’re not a wine fan, they also serve beer and cocktails and at the food stall, you can order lángos or other Hungarian dishes.

The beach vibe is guaranteed by the sand and small palm trees, however, you won’t have a direct connection with the river.

Pontoon

Pontoon has a perfect location at the foot of the Chain Bridge (Lánchíd) with a view to Castle District, Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. You can sit at the side of the river, watch the sunset and enjoy live music every day. Live music is performed in different genres by local bands before sunset and quality techno and party music after sunset. Check their facebook for events.

Besides music, every kind of drinks is available (in a refundable reusable cup): cocktails, spirits, wines, beers, lemonade and even more. I also have to mention their tasty pizza 😛 See, this place is close to paradise, therefore it can be very busy during summer afternoons and nights. I’m sure you’ll find your seat or your place on the dancefloor!

Just be careful at the edge of the embankment!

Raqpart bar

Raqpart is the neighbour of Pontoon, only the Chain Bridge divides them. The view of the Castle District is also gorgeous from here.

I have to admit that I’ve never tried out this bar because I have a thing for Pontoon, so I always went to the other side of the bridge…

Piazza Budapest (formerly called Terasz)

Piazza Budapest is located on the impressive Március 15. square, next to Erzsébet Bridge, with a view to the Gellért Hill and Citadel. The square is big, bright and partly green, however, it doesn’t have a direct connection to the river.

Piazza is like an urban jungle with plants and neon lights. Only the reusable cups are ruining the jungle mood. My wine was served is a wine plastic glass, which looked a bit creepy (no photos), though the wine tasted good.

A kitchen, offering a few dishes, is also part of the place. The salad I tried was tasty, but the portion was too small compared to its price.

Esetleg Bar & Bistro in Bálna Budapest

Esetleg owns an outdoor and indoor area as well, so it operates during colder seasons too. Regardless of the season, the view is always amazing and this a perfect place to watch the sunset with a sight to Gellért Hill and Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd).

The friendly waiters will serve you whatever you want from the menu, I highly recommend their cocktail and wine selection. The food menu also offers many options including international and Hungarian dishes alike.

It’s recommended to reserve a table for warm summer nights.

Jónás Craft Beer House in Bálna Budapest

Jónás Kézműves Sörház is also situated in Bálna Budapest with a terrace as well as an indoor area, so it functions during every season. Besides craft beers, you can drink wine and lemonade too, moreover, satisfy your hunger with hamburger, sandwiches and other snacks.

Valyo – closed permanently

I loved this place, which was at the foot of Rákóczi Bridge, but it’s closed permanently. Bad news 🙁
