Do you believe in unicorns? If yes, you’re in the right place because unicorns exist in my Wonderland 🙂 As I’m a kid sometimes, this unicorn trend was meant to be for me. I’m just happy seeing them on social media, in swimming pools and these cute creatures can appear even on our plate! In Budapest, you can also find unicorns and colourful unicorn-inspired food. In this unicorn and rainbow food guide to Budapest, I’ll show you where to eat the most colourful unicorn-themed food.

Mr Funk and Ms Bagel for funky donuts – CLOSED

Mr Funk is a sugar heaven with colourful donuts, shakes and decoration. This donut and bagel shop is totally worth a visit (not my architect self is speaking now). The interior could be on design sites thanks to its colourful and playful floor, donuts on the wall, greeting on the ceiling and open kitchen, where the magic happens. And don’t forget to visit the restroom for a vivid experience.

Of course, I went there because of unicorns…

You can ask for a blushing unicorn donut with tasty horn and cute ears, but if you are totally obsessed with unicorns (like me), order a UNICORN FREAK SHAKE! It’s freaking tasty and looks gorgeous! Do you know that feeling when the food is so beautiful, that you don’t want to eat it? This is a moment like that! Every part of this beauty is super tasty! A tender donut with tasty marzipan horn floats on pink cherry shake, which isn’t as sweet as I expected.

In summer, Unicorn IceCloud also joins to the unicorn family, which is ice cream in cone coated with cotton candy and topped with marshmallow and golden horn.

Sugar shop, the design confectionery

Sugar! is more than a confectionery, imagine yourself in a sweet Wonderland surrounded by colourful candies, huge lollipops, balloons, pool floats, fluffy toys, costumes and unicorns. You can bring home some unicorns if you want to spice up your home or office.

Here you can also eat unicorns. Maybe this sounds a bit creepy… 😛 Whatever, let’s see the edible unicorns!

The rainbow cake is very yummy. The coloured sponge cake layers and the blue fondant are tasty, just like the super cute smiling marzipan unicorn floating on a sugary cloud. Don’t judge me, I ate the unicorn 😉

The unicorn cupcake didn’t become my favourite because the rainbow creamy top is too sweet, but the muffin tastes good with the chocolate chips. This cupcake is available with different unicorn and rainbow decorations.

The unicorn and the bubblegum macarons are the most multicoloured ones, both gluten-free.

Unicorn days at Sugar shop

The 2nd weekend of January is the most awaited weekend of the year for unicorn lovers! In mid-January (check the date on their facebook page), Sugar shop turns into the home of sweet and tasty unicorns. Try out as many unicorn-inspired foods as you can: unicorn cake pop, unicorn magnum, unicorn panna, macaron ice cream sandwich, unicorn macaron, unicorn bubble, unicorn cupcake, unicorn shake. So hard to choose…

I’m satisfied with picking the unicorn cake pop. The chocolate filling is flavoured with rum and covered with coloured buttercream. #omnomnom

The magnum shaped unicorn magnum isn’t filled with ice cream. Under the crunchy white chocolate, you’ll bite in a chocolate mousse.

Unicorn shake is perfect to finish a colourful dish like this. It’s a mix of ice cream and milk topped with whipped cream, colourful sprinkles, gold marzipan horn and ears. Delicious and delightful!

Cake Shop

Cake Shop uses quality ingredients and prepares gluten-, lactose- and sugar-free cakes too.

I visited them to try out a cute unicorn muffin, unfortunately, it’s not on the menu every day 🙁 But they compensated me with a unicorn hot chocolate, so I wasn’t disappointed 🙂

The pink unicorn hot chocolate is made of white chocolate, milk, cherry syrup (this gives the pink colour), whipped cream and colourful candies on top. First I really liked it, but I felt a bit of sugar overdose at the end.

I won’t give up on the muffin, so I’ll return!

Macaron Heaven manufactory

Unicorn + macaron = #omnonom

These unicorn-shaped macarons (and also their friends) are so cute and tasty. I guess cute and tasty shouldn’t be in one sentence… Whatever 😉

The unicorn with a horn is vanilla flavoured and the one without a horn is caramel flavoured. Both desserts are delicious and also their flamingo sister. If you don’t mind eating cute macarons, this is your place, my friend!

The Sweet by Vintage Garden

The Sweet has an always-changing seasonal design and interior. Though the beautiful and tasty cakes wait for you all the time, just like their specialities, the hot chocolates made of dark, milk or white chocolate. The beautiful biscuits and cute cups are also part of the decoration.

The multicoloured cake pop is super tasty, the chocolate mousse inside is very tender and not that sweet.

The unicorn macaron is a bit dry, not the best one. The look is not everything 😉

Egyszarvú | Unicorn Bistro

In 2021, the 1st Unicorn Bistro opened in Budapest (and Europe)! As a unicorn and rainbow fan, I had to check it out 😉

Spotting the bistro on Nagymező street was easy, thanks to its blush pink decoration and outdoor seating. The interior is dressed in more pink shades and unicorns. As a unicorn lover, maybe I had high expectations… But the decor was a bit exaggerated. Too much blush pink, weird unicorn painting and accessories… Although, the floral telephone booth is a cool Instagrammable spot.

When a place is called Unicorn Bistro, you might expect unicorns… Many unicorns… There weren’t many of them, though I loved the salt & pepper set, the unicorn desserts and the restroom signs. Don’t miss the restroom, the tap is also a unicorn.

The staff was dressed in a blush pink stylish outfit and were kind and helpful.

The menu has a wide selection. Choose from paninis, salads, burgers, pasta, snacks and many desserts. We went for the unicorn burgers because of their horns. My Black Unicorn Burger had a black bun and was topped with colourful cheddar sauce. The sauce didn’t have a special taste, the burger was tasty, though it wasn’t the best burger ever. The burgers were served with fries and coleslaw, which wasn’t the best either.

Shakes, lemonades, coffees, soft drinks and dazed unicorn drinks are on the drink menu. To be dazed unicorns, we tried out the Unicorn Spritzer with grapefruit taste, which was strangely tasty. While paying, we had to find out, that it wasn’t a homemade cocktail. Their wine menu has also some interesting pieces with the blue “Unicorn blood” and the sparkling “Unicorn tear “ rosé. If you’re a sweet wine fan, you can experiment with it.

You can book a table through their website, where the menu is also available (only in Hungarian for now).

If you need a foodie experience, I’d suggest skipping this place. Though if you’re still interested give it a chance. Maybe they’ll improve in the meantime with decoration, food and unicorn music.

Waffle dog / Sweets on wheels by Waffle dog

Waffle dog sells Dutch mini pancakes (Poffertjes) and filled waffles called waffle dog. Oh, those fluffy colourful waffles 😛 It’s so fluffy, I’m gonna die!

Their unicorn-inspired, sparkle pony sweet dog is topped with vanilla cream, colourful candies and marshmallows and it’s filled with cocoa dragées. It tastes magical! And if you want to drink from a unicorn mug, order a latte macchiato. I spotted the unicorn mug on the counter and I couldn’t resist asking what I have to order to drink from it 🙂

But I’m not sure, that they still serve from those unicorn mugs… The permanent location of Waffle dog is temporarily closed. I really hope it’ll be open soon because you should experience that special unicorn atmosphere, even if you decide to eat something else (everything looks delicious on the menu) 😉  There are unicorns on the wall, at the counter, almost in every corner and the friendly owner likes to be surrounded by them 🙂

You can still try out the waffle dogs and pancakes at their temporary kiosks.

Zabrakadabra, the vegan confectionery

Zabrakadabra is specialised in vegan, paleo, gluten- and lactose-free desserts, so everyone gets something healthy.

I found some unicorns in the shape of a unicorn muffin. The strawberry jam-filled muffin tastes very good, but the pinkish yellowish hair with glitters was very sweet.

Sütit akarok! and Sütit akarok! Mini

Sütit akarok! = I want cake!

Who wants a cake? In Sütit akarok! you can choose from many cakes and sweets, however, unicorns aren’t on the menu all the time. They have a big confectionery in Buda and a mini version in Pest. The selection is always bigger in the big store and on special weekends unicorns are also part of the store.

In October for a weekend, both Sütit akarok! host Unicorn days featuring rainbow cakes, unicorn cake pops and other colourful sweets.

Johnny’s Bistro Buda

This is the only one I haven’t visited because it’s located far from the city centre, even from the centre of Buda. But if you’re going to or coming from the chairlift to János Hill, you can stop on your way there.

You won’t find any unicorns on the menu, just ask for a milkshake, which looks like a unicorn shake… On the photos, almost all of the milkshakes contain some pink colour, even the Kinder Bueno, Cheesecake, Nutella-Banana, Salted Caramel milkshakes. You can’t complain, I’ve done my research 😉
